Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) refers to wireless internet that is delivered to a fixed location, like a home, office, or factory. Now, 5G technology allows FWA to compete directly with wired connections, such as fiber or traditional cable lines.
FWA avoids the cost of getting permits, laying cable, and performing installations. In fact, FWA services can use the same infrastructure already in place for mobile cellular internet connections. Many areas in the Philippines, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and Turkey have skipped over wired broadband internet connections altogether. Instead, FWA is providing the first wave of broadband services.
Why is the Fixed Wireless Access market growing so quickly?
Government subsidies like the FCC’s Rural Digital Opportunity Fund are accelerating Fixed Wireless Access growth. Those subsidies, combined with technological advances, will drive the FWA market size from $1.4 billion in 2021 to upwards of $89 billion by 2027.
Currently, FWA connectivity plans are about 50% cheaper than typical cable modem or fiber broadband internet connections. With that price advantage, it is no surprise that FWA is projected to account for 10% of US broadband connections soon.
